Never before have people had more opportunities to design their own individual lifestyles. On the other hand, we often feel compelled by our neo-liberalist values to strive for maximum flexibility, efficiency, innovation, and responsibility in everything we say and do. What may mean greater freedom to some all too often leads others to push themselves to their mental and physical limits, leading to familiar consequences such as burnout and other illnesses.
This exhibition brings together contemporary photographic and video works that portray alternative lifestyles and countercultures, showing that it can mean to withdraw completely from society or to reside in a community of like-minded contrarians. These are ways of life that attack the soft underbelly of our Western consumer society and instead focus on values such as self-determination, spirituality, simplicity, and inner freedom.

Artists:
Andrea Büttner, Roger Eberhard, Tom Hunter, Timm Rautert, Alec Soth, Joel Sternfeld, Constanze Vielgosz, Julia Zimmermann and others.
