This book is a collection of portrait photographs of empty boxes. It is a project that Bohnchang Koo has kept secret until now, never showing anywhere. There is no trace of what was inside the boxes, only a few stains and dust remain. They are all just ordinary empty boxes that could be found anywhere.

kuushurai kuushukyo

It sounds like a magic spell, but it's a Zen phrase: "Come empty-handed, and leave empty-handed." It reflects Koo's views on photography and life. No, rather than simply reflecting them, this empty box series is where Koo's pursuit of "traces of time" is expressed in its purest form.

'While photographing objects, I don't want to be bound by them. Perhaps the object itself is no longer important. Yet, the body is necessary to capture its traces. Among the things I've photographed so far, there have been some, like the white porcelain of the Joseon Dynasty and Mr. Sakata's antique tools, where the body already possesses value, but a half-used bar of soap had no artistic value whatsoever. And that was comforting.* Bohnchang Koo
