Entrevistas is about looking at the city of São Paulo from the point of view of it’s inhabitants. The images are an intriguing combination of portraits, of interiors and of city views seen through the windows of this gigantic megalopolis. As the name suggests EntreVistas is about looking between views and being able to see simultaneously the city and the interiors.
After photographing over 70 different homes from different social backgrounds and areas of the city, Claudia made a selection of 45 interiors that show the diversity encountered in São Paulo. From Morumbi an area of big mansions to the poor neigborhoods of newly arrived bolivian workers the panoramic views of the interior of homes portrays the citizens and how they live.
This work does not merely point out to social issues but rather brings together people who would never meet in a common space which is their city. It highlights different ways of living and of being in this complex megalopolis. It acknowledges the importance of diversity. The city is at times shown in its spetacularity, at times as a mere glimpse or in some cases not at all depending on the housing conditions.
The photos were made at the end of the day when the falling light brings intimacy into the different homes. The choice of shooting at twilight was due to the desire to find people at home at a time of recollection, back from a workday. Everyone photographed for this project shows a particular way of dealing with the spatial reality of the colossal mass of the city in the intimate moment observed inside their homes.
The leporello format creates spreads where each photo is composed of 4 pages of 21,5cm x 76cm but can be seen separatly as double pages. This sequencing of the images creates new perspectives on the city. The boundaries between different places become fluid and in several moments one cannot discern the real limit.
CLAUDIA JAGUARIBE was born in Rio de Janeiro. She lives and works in São Paulo. Since 1990 she takes part in exhibitions in major museums and galleries, in Brazil and abroad. She holds a degree in Art History, Art and Photography, from Boston University , USA.
