Artistic Reflections on the Relationship between Man and Nature

First comprehensive publication on the photographer

Exhibition at the Fotomuseum Winterthur: 28 February to 14 June 2026

Ester Vonplon’s artistic praxis focuses on places that are – supposedly – still intact and unspoiled. Aware of the fragility of the eco-systems, she tries to capture nature in photographs before it possibly disappears due to climate changes and human interventions.

The publication provides insight into three of the artist’s current series on which she worked in three different areas in Graubünden. Vonplon documents these landscapes using experimental photographic methods - either photograms of natural finds, like stones, fungi, grasses or feathers, which the sunlight then exposes directly onto historical Cellofix photographic paper, or a disused tunnel as a dark room, or else setting out on her own into rough terrain with a large-format analogue camera.

Photographic Encounters was initiated by the Christoph Merian Stiftung and is enabled by the Geissmann Scholarship for Photography.
