"Olga Ignatovich: In the Shadows of the Big Brother" is a unique photobook that showcases the legacy of Olga Ignatovich, one of seven female photojournalists who covered World War II from the Soviet Union's perspective. The book is based on Olga Ignatovich's recently discovered archive of frontline negatives, which had long been considered lost forever.
Olga Ignatovich photographed the war from its first days to its last. The book includes more than 250 photographs, including pictures of Kalinin Front fighter pilots, the liberation of Rzhev, the Red Army's advance to the West under the command of Marshals Zhukov and Konev, the liberation of Poland, combat in Germany, the meeting between Konev and Bradley and the post-war reconstruction of Austria, among other subjects. Of particular significance are the photographs that Olga Ignatovich took during the Red Army's liberation of the German death camps Majdanek and Auschwitz. Her photographs of the Auschwitz death camp were included in the Nuremberg trials materials.
When we talk about Olga Ignatovich's biography, her family name is most often associated with the legacy of Boris Ignatovich, a classic of Soviet photography. Perhaps this is why her own work has always been overshadowed by her 'big brother'. Olga Ignatovich's war photographs not only serve as historical records but also as powerful visual narratives that offer a more intimate and human perspective on the war.
