Robert Waldl has been dealing with topics related to image, image and identity since the 1980s. In the various series of his photographic and media work, he examined the discrepancy between self-image and external image, image typologies and visual stereotypes. For the photographer, the means of his image creation, the camera and its optics, is the linchpin of the investigation; the focused and sharp photo portrait is generally considered the "most successful". Waldl, however, explores the space behind the portraits and incorporates the person depicted in the construction of the picture: a blurred portrait leaves room for interpretation, but also refuses an ostensible recognition effect. Waldl opens up a field of self-assurance for the individual, knowing how limited the space for personal development is, how transparent the individual becomes in the picture and how uncompromisingly people can be reduced to sheer data collection, for example in the standardized passport photo.
