In his new book, The Beauty of Serious Work, Andreas Meichsner reveals beautiful aspects of the serious work of the TÜV Rheinland. Rather than producing a reportage of day-to-day business, the photographer approaches the different working and testing situations encountered in the course of the Technical Inspection Agency by way of well-balanced individual portraits. Each photograph is its own microcosm, governed by laws that are not always immediately apparent, and with dynamics that pursue an unknown goal. Like in his previous book, Alles in Ordnung (Kehrer 2011), Andreas Meichsner seeks out the special moments in everyday situations. While Alles in Ordnung focused on package-deal vacationers, who in the confined space of hotel facilities became adven- turers in the thrall of the entertainment staff, here the central theme is institutions and people who seem to defy the wildest of absurdities with great diligence, in order to ensure that we, as consumers, can be safe and carefree. The Beauty of Serious Work was recognized at the Sony World Photography Awards 2013, as well as winning the Punkt Award of the German Academy of Science and Engineering, the GRAIN/FORMAT, and the Paul Hill Award.
