Gerti Deutsch’s work remains relevant because of her deeply humanistic approach and the respectful, empathetic depiction of her subjects. Her images, often quiet and restrained but always with precise composition, touch us with their universal themes of family, society and community.

She was part of a generation that used photography as a medium for social commentary, and yet her work is unique for its quiet power and focus on the personal rather than the dramatic. Along with the well-known Magnum photographer Inge Morath, Gerti Deutsch ranks as one of the most important early figures in the history of Austrian-British photographic art.
