Der Riss ist eine ungewöhnliche Graphic Novel. Eine Fotoreportage in Form eines Comics, ein Reisebericht mit authentischem Bildmaterial – in vielerlei Hinsicht eine Grenzerfahrung. Für das spanische Magazin El País Semanal machen sich der Fotograf Carlos Spottorno und der Journalist Guillermo Abril auf den Weg an die Außengrenzen der EU: Von Melilla, der spanischen Enklave in Marokko, schwer bewacht und durch einen schier unüberwindbaren Zaun geschützt bis in den Norden Finnlands, bis in die Wälder Weißrusslands, wo NATO-Truppen für einen Grenzkonflikt mit Russland trainieren. Die Autoren merken schnell, dass die europäische Grenze sehr viel komplexer ist, als dass man sie an einem einzigen Ort vollständig begreifen könnte. Sie treffen Flüchtende, Grenzsoldaten und Kommunalpolitiker, und halten ihre Erlebnisse in Wort und Bild fest. Ein einmaliges Dokument der Herausforderungen welche tagtäglich an den Grenzen der EU auftreten.
