Who else can claim to have photographed almost a thousand castles? Gustave William Lemaire was born in England in 1848 and became a photographer in the United States, settling in Vineuil (Loir-et-Cher) in 1879 after returning from a nearly 10-year stay in the US. At the turn of the 20th century, he travelled the roads of northwestern France by car and photographed the castles, manors and residences of the old nobility, the upper middle class and wealthy industrialists. While postcards only show the façade, Gustave William captured the 'castle life' up close. He gained access to richly furnished interiors and revealed gardens and outbuildings. He also photographed the owners and their household staff.
Drawing on the Lemaire collection at the Médiathèque du Patrimoine et de la Photographie (MPP), comprising 6,494 gelatin bromide glass plates and 420 prints, as well as numerous unpublished archival documents, this book is the first biography of Gustave William Lemaire, offering an initial approach to his work, which remains largely unknown but is fully accessible online via the Ministry of Culture's POP database.
