Large rivers connect people and are fraught with myths. They are the ways of communication and imperial power, the place of dreams and failed hope. The river Elbe is shown in "Quer zum Strom" as a mythical place. The german photographer Jo Röttger photographed the river for several years from the same balcony - always with the same view, always in the same picture, again and again. He shows the metamorphoses of the water: waves, clouds and wind change, ships and submarines pass by, random people walking coastwise cross the picture. The images in this book show the interplay of a fixed picture frame and the continous variations of its contents.
