"A Sea of Being" is my first photo book on Butoh, an avant-garde performance art in postwar Japan and the result of an artistic collaboration with the dancer Mirjam Morad. We explore the outer landscape with all our senses, yearn for modes to connect with the inner self, with the image as the key agent in this exchange.

"There are windows or wavelengths of perception. They are simul-taneous and interwoven at any one moment, but we are tuned only to a certain frequency range." (Bill Viola, Statements, 1985).

Mirjam is a Vienna based performer with strong ties to Kazuo Ohno, one of the leading figures and founders of Butoh. Her work is closely connected to and inspired by nature and the understanding of the world as one single, breathing entity.

The publication is edited in English and Japanese in order to give cre-dit to the way Japanese contemporary culture inspired and guided us
in our perception of dance, of storytelling, of transformation and - ultimately - in the making of the book.
